Repairs we handle on shower valves
- Cartridges for Moen, Delta, Price Pfister and Kohler single- and two-handle valves
- Stems, seats and springs on older compression valves that drip
- Temperature that drifts or spikes, including pressure-balance spools that stick
- Anti-scald limit stops set so the handle stops at a safe maximum
- Trim kits: a fresh handle, plate and sleeve that fit the valve behind them
- Same-type valve replacement when the body cannot be rebuilt
What San Gabriel’s older housing means for showers
San Gabriel’s Housing Element preliminary report found that 52.3 percent of its housing units are more than 60 years old. In homes of that age it is common to find compression valves with separate hot and cold handles, or early single-handle valves whose maker has changed part numbers several times. Before we come out, we try to identify the valve from your photo so we bring the right cartridge instead of guessing.
Most of the city gets its water from the County Water District, and the district’s 2025 Consumer Confidence Report lists an average hardness of 97 ppm. That is moderate, but minerals still collect on cartridge seals and O-rings over the years, which is often why a handle that once turned easily now takes two hands.
Scald protection is the other half. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s tap water scald guidance notes that a thirty second exposure to 130 degree water can cause burns. The limit stop inside a single-handle valve is meant to cap the hot side, and we check it on every cartridge job.
Work that goes to a plumber
Our valve replacements are like for like: the same style of valve, in the same spot, on the same supply lines. Moving a valve, changing from two handles to one, adding a diverter or body sprays, or repairing corroded pipe inside the wall goes to a plumber, and we tell you that in our first reply.
Photos that help
One photo of the handle and plate from straight on, one of the shower head, and any brand name or logo you can find on the trim. Tell us whether it drips, runs too hot, too cold, or turns stiffly.
Questions about shower valves
Why does my shower go hot when someone flushes a toilet?
Most valves made in recent decades balance hot and cold pressure so this does not happen. When it does, the balancing part inside is stuck with scale or the valve is an older type without one. A new cartridge usually restores it on newer valves.
Which cartridge does my shower need?
It depends on the brand and series of the valve, not the handle. Moen, Delta, Price Pfister and Kohler each make several cartridges that look alike. We match it from the valve itself, and take the old one to compare when the markings are gone.
Can a two-handle shower be repaired?
Yes. Two-handle valves usually have a stem and seat on each side. We replace worn stems, washers and seats, and set new handles and plates if the old ones are cracked.
Is the handle that stops at warm a problem?
Not always. The limit stop may be set low on purpose. If the shower never gets warm enough, we reset the stop and check the temperature at the head so it stays below a safe maximum.
Do you need to cut into the tile?
For cartridges, stems and trim kits, no; everything comes out from the front. A like-for-like valve body swap sometimes needs an access panel from the other side of the wall, and we look for that option first.
