What we hook up
- New fridges tied in to an existing ice maker valve
- A proper tee and quarter-turn valve at the sink’s cold supply where none exists
- Saddle valves taken off and the pipe repaired
- Cracked or yellowed plastic tubing swapped for braided stainless
- Wall boxes with a built-in valve replaced in place
- The fridge rolled back without crushing or kinking the line
Ice maker lines in older San Gabriel kitchens
The Census Bureau puts San Gabriel’s median year built at 1957, decades before ice makers were standard. Lines were added piecemeal over the years, so it is common to find several fittings, mismatched tubing and a saddle valve between the sink and the fridge. Each joint is a place to leak.
Leaks behind appliances often go unnoticed. EPA WaterSense guidance says household leaks average more than 9,300 gallons wasted a year, and recommends watching the water meter over a two-hour stretch with nothing running; any movement points to a leak.
Our process
Trace the old line
From the fridge back to wherever it tees into the supply.
Water off and replace
Saddle valve and old tubing out; new tee, valve and braided line in.
Connect the fridge
Line fitted to the fridge inlet with a service loop behind it.
Purge and inspect
Water run through the dispenser until it flows clear; both ends checked dry.
Where our part stops
A line through a wall, under a raised floor or to an island where there is no supply goes to a plumber. We work from existing valves and reachable supplies.

Ice maker line questions
Why do saddle valves leak?
They clamp onto the pipe and pierce it; the seal wears over time. A proper tee and valve is more reliable.
Is copper tubing OK?
It can be, if it is not kinked. Braided stainless is easier to move when the fridge comes out.
My ice tastes off. Is it the line?
Often it is the fridge filter. Change it per the maker’s schedule.
Can you run a line across the kitchen?
Along a cabinet run, sometimes. Through walls or floors goes to a plumber.
How do I spot a slow leak?
Watch the water meter over two hours with nothing running, as the EPA suggests.
Do new fridges need a special line?
Most use a standard quarter-inch connection. We check your model first.
Will you pull the fridge out?
Yes, and set it back level.
How long is the water off?
Usually less than an hour.
Should I throw out the first ice?
Many manuals say to discard the first few batches after a new hookup.
Do you remove the old tubing?
Yes, all of it we can reach.
