Plaster in pre-war houses
San Gabriel’s city survey describes most homes as Period Revival, Minimal Traditional and Ranch houses from the 1920s to 1950s. Houses from the earlier part of that span were generally plastered, and plaster needs a different patch than drywall to sit flush and hold.
Before you call: what to check
- Knock lightly around a crack. A hollow sound can mean the plaster has loosened from the lath behind it.
- Note whether a crack runs diagonally from a door or window corner. These usually come from settling.
- Keep leftover paint indoors. Cans stored in a hot garage can separate or spoil.
