What I add
- Grab bars in bathrooms, set into studs or rated anchors
- Handrails at porch steps, sunken rooms and stairs
- Brighter fixtures and switches that are easy to reach
- Motion lights at entries and along paths
- Furniture and bookcases anchored
- Lever handles and easier cabinet pulls
Older homes, older owners
The city’s Housing Element counts 52.3 percent of San Gabriel homes as more than 60 years old. Many have a step up at the porch, a step down into a back room, plaster walls and small bathrooms, so bars and rails need careful placement and mounting through plaster into framing.
I plan around the person: which hand they use, where they reach, and which routes they walk at night.
How I approach it
Visit
We walk the house together.
List
A short written list with an estimate per item.
Install
Most items handled together.
Check
Bars and rails tested by the person who will use them.
Outside my work
I don’t give medical advice. Ramps, stair lifts and walk-in showers go to specialists; an occupational therapist can advise on a person’s specific needs.
On the same San Gabriel visit, people also tend to ask about grab bar installation, light fixture swaps, furniture anchoring or outdoor and motion lights.
Send me
Photos of the bathroom, steps and hallways, and what has been hard to manage.
Home safety questions
Can grab bars go on plaster walls?
Yes, fastened through the plaster into the framing.
Can you add railings to porch steps?
Yes, where there is solid wood or concrete to fasten to.
What are easy safety updates for an older home?
Grab bars, rails at steps, brighter lights and anchored furniture.

How much does it cost?
It depends on the list. Text photos for a free estimate.

Can you work while my parent is home?
Yes. I keep paths clear and explain as I go.

Do you build ramps?
No. Ramps go to a contractor.
