What I install
- Wall mailboxes fastened through stucco, wood siding or brick
- Locking mailboxes for mail and small packages
- Curbside posts dug and set in concrete
- Old rusted or broken boxes removed and holes patched
- House numbers placed for street visibility
- Mail slots’ exterior plates and covers replaced
Rules for curbside boxes
For curbside boxes, the Postal Service’s mailbox page says the box bottom should be roughly 41 to 45 inches from the road and set back 6 to 8 inches from the curb face, and a post shouldn’t go deeper than 24 inches. Moving to a wall box from a curbside one needs your postmaster’s OK.
Any post hole waits for underground utilities to be marked: California’s DigAlert 811 service needs at least two working days’ notice. Private lines like sprinklers aren’t marked, so tell me where they run.
How I install it
Pick the spot
I check where your carrier delivers now and where the box can mount solidly.
Check underground
For posts, DigAlert is called and sprinkler lines are located.
Mount it
Wall boxes go into framing or masonry anchors; posts are set plumb in concrete.
Finish up
Old holes are patched, numbers mounted, and keys handed over.
What I don’t do
Brick or stone mailbox columns and apartment cluster boxes go to a mason or the postmaster.
On the same San Gabriel visit, people also tend to ask about lock and door hardware replacement, fence and gate repair or outdoor and motion lights.
What to text
A photo of the current box or spot, the wall material, and the new box if you have one.
