Outlets behind plaster walls
San Gabriel’s Housing Element reports that 52.3% of the city’s homes are more than 60 years old. The Historic Resources Survey places much of the housing between the 1920s and the 1950s, when outlets were few, often two-slot, and set in shallow metal boxes inside plaster and lath walls.
The CPSC GFCI fact sheet says a GFCI cuts power when current leaks “by a very small amount (as little as 0.006 amperes)” and that “A GFCI works even on two-slot receptacles.” That makes it the straightforward upgrade for an ungrounded outlet next to a kitchen or bathroom sink in an older San Gabriel house, without opening the plaster.
The visit, step by step
Map the circuit
We test each outlet you mention and find any GFCI upstream, so one device can protect the rest of the run where that makes sense.
Open carefully
Plaster walls crack easily. The cover plate is scored free of paint before removal, and the breaker is off and verified first.
Fit the right device
Cloth-insulated wires are checked for brittleness before anything is reconnected. Sound wires go onto the new device; damaged ones stop the job.
Label and test
GFCIs protecting ungrounded outlets get the “No equipment ground” sticker, and every device is tested with a plug-in tester.
When an electrician is needed
Brittle cloth wiring, knob-and-tube circuits, adding a new outlet, or a panel problem goes to an electrician. We point out what we see and leave the box safe.
What to text
Photos of the outlets or switches, the room, and whether the house has a breaker panel or fuses.
Outlet and switch questions
Do cloth-covered wires mean you will not work?
If the insulation is sound we can reuse them. Cracked or crumbling cloth wiring stops the job for an electrician.
Do you replace outlets in the garage?
Yes, including GFCIs and weather-resistant covers on exterior walls.
Can you match ivory or brown devices?
Yes, when those finishes are still available.
My house has only two-slot outlets. What can I do?
A GFCI outlet gives shock protection without a ground wire. Grounded three-prong outlets need an electrician to add a ground.
Will replacing outlets crack my plaster?
We take care around the plate and box. Any small chip at the edge is filled before we leave.
How do I know if a GFCI still works?
Press TEST with a lamp plugged in. The lamp should go out, and RESET should bring it back. The CPSC suggests testing monthly.
Can you replace old push-button switches?
Yes, with modern switches. Reproduction push-button switches are also available if you want to keep the look.
Why does my switch feel hot?
A dimmer can get warm, but a standard switch should not. Turn it off and send us a photo.
Do you install smart switches?
Yes, where the box has a neutral wire or the switch is made to work without one.
